Bakery Hoko

Inspired by Hong Kong’s traditional neighbourhood bakeries, Bakery Hoko bakes small-batch buns and pastries throughout the day from an open kitchen at the quieter end of Bethnal Green Road. The husband-and-wife team behind Hoko Hong Kong Cafe and Hoko Wonton Noodles began their own baking venture when their bread supplier closed, leading to a menu anchored by soft milk bread, bolo (pineapple) buns with thick salted butter, Ovaltine cream buns, and Hong Kong egg tarts. Weekend specials might bring garlic mascarpone cream cones, while snow-crust char siu buns and beechwood-smoked sausage rolls reflect a mix of classic and inventive fillings.

French toast made with house-baked milk bread and drinks such as Hong Kong milk tea, yuen yeung, and iced sugar cane jasmine tea echo the cha chaan teng roots. The design references stairwells and corridors from Hong Kong public housing, blending dark brick, mosaic tiles, and butter-yellow tables with details like vintage plates and Cantopop soundtracks—personal, distinctive, and true to its origins.
