Azra

Azra stands out for its thoughtful homage to the Hazara community inside a striking, design-led arches space next to Leyton Midland station. The interior is the work of founder Waheed Kazemi’s own design studio, featuring crockery by local artisans and seating for 40. Built around the Afghan tradition of the mehman khanah—an open guest room for welcoming friends and family—the restaurant is helmed by three siblings and their mother, Sakeenah, who leads the kitchen.

The menu highlights deeply rooted Afghan dishes, including a slow-cooked signature kabuli pulao with lamb, carrots and raisins, as well as bolani (pan-fried flatbreads), mantu dumplings, yakhni stew, and skewered kebabs. Across every plate, Azra aims to preserve Afghan culinary traditions while showcasing the resilience and heritage of its owners. The restaurant’s story draws powerfully from their family’s journey and a commitment to sharing Afghan culture and hospitality in East London.
