Bitxo Taverna opened in early June 2026 at Carrer de Riego 43 in Sants, a few metres from Plaça Osca, as Barcelona’s first Catalan-Indonesian tavern. Jordi Bernús runs the kitchen. He was head of service in the last years of El Bulli, then spent four years at Sants Es Crema before that room closed. His partner, Jordi Devesa of pizzeria La Clote, trained the team there for two months. Time Out sat the door in the first week of June and found Indonesian regulars already on the inner terrace.

The cooking is not a fusion costume. Bernús lived four years in Indonesia; his wife is Indonesian, and he has said she is the reason the carta exists. Indonesian cuisine, in his telling, sits close to Thai on product and closer to Catalan on long stews. So the plates keep both names: nasi goreng with a sweet-sour-spice balance; lumpia filled with capipota and sambal, or with ensaladilla russa, lime and anchovy; fricandó rewritten as semur — beef cheek and moixernons in coconut milk — with jasmine rice; esqueixada karedok; escudella buntut; a rendang sandwich. Dessert is a spicy chocolate flan with olive-oil islands in the caramel, a nod to pa amb xocolata i oli. The ticket sits around €25 including drinks.

The carta is short and glossed so Catalan diners can read the Indonesian words, split into per picar, starters, grill, bread-soaking sauces, sandwiches and dessert. Draft beer comes from a master keg. Bitxo is the first of three neighbourhood rooms under the name El Crit de la Terra — cooking from the land, with recipes the pair write themselves, in rooms that are meant to stay in the barrio. Sants already had a young restaurant strip around Osca; this door is the one that did not open another tapas tavern. Bernús has said there is still no restaurant like it in Barcelona or Catalonia, and that he only wants to open things that do not already exist.

Time Out Barcelona filed the opening on 9 June 2026. @bitxotaverna is the live camera for hours and the week’s plates. Confirm them before you walk.
