Things to do this weekend in Athens, August 28–30 2026

On Friday, the Ministry of Culture repeats a ritual it has staged every August since 1996. Across Greece, 61 archaeological sites, monuments and museums host concerts, theatre and walks for the full moon. Another 65 remain open late with free admission, roughly from 19:30 to midnight. One hundred and twenty-six doors, one night. In Athens, that means the Acropolis, the Roman Agora and the Olympieion — marble usually closed by the time the heat finally loosens its grip. The Acropolis Museum stays open from 09:00 until midnight, with free entry to its temporary exhibition of ancient Greek art found in Italy; the guided moon walk requires a reservation on the museum’s own platform. If you would rather sit than climb, the Full Moon Film Marathon takes over the Great Lawn at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center the same night: four Kubrick films from 21:00, free, blanket recommended. On Saturday, Enrico Sangiuliano plays with Sama' Abdulhadi at Bolivar Beach Bar on Posidonos Avenue in Alimos, from 21:00 to 06:00, with tickets from €35 to €800. But that is not the weekend’s real story. Friday is — free, nocturnal, and available only once a year on this calendar.

Sunday is deliberately quieter. The moon has moved on; the sites return to tickets and ordinary closing times. The Olympieion will look the same in daylight as it did under the lamps, which is precisely why it is worth seeing twice if you can: once with a crowd at 23:00, once with almost no one on Sunday morning.

If you go out only once, make it Friday. Start at the Acropolis Museum if you booked, or at the Roman Agora if you did not. Stay out until midnight. Athens does not often give you its stones after dark, and it will not do so again until August 2027.
